2. Observation

Status: Standby.
Select an aqueous salt extract. The addition of Nessler's reagent (K₂[HgI₄]) in an alkaline medium will trigger a complexation reaction if NH₄⁺ is present.

3. Chemical Principles

Reaction: Nessler's reagent is an alkaline solution of Potassium tetraiodomercurate(II).

Ammonia reacts with the complex to form a brown precipitate known as the Iodide of Millon's base.

NH₄⁺ + 2[HgI₄]²⁻ + 4OH⁻ → HgO·Hg(NH₂)I↓ + 7I⁻ + 3H₂O
