Select an organic compound and click "Add Fehling's Reagent". Fehling's A ($CuSO_4$) and Fehling's B (Rochelle salt) are mixed to form a deep blue complex.
3. Redox Chemistry
Aliphatic Aldehydes are easily oxidized to carboxylic acids. Cu²⁺ ions (deep blue) are reduced to Cu⁺, forming insoluble Cu₂O (brick-red).
R-CHO + 2Cu²⁺ + 5OH⁻ → R-COO⁻ + Cu₂O↓ + 3H₂O
Ketones & Aromatic Aldehydes generally do not react.
