Tollens' Test (Silver Mirror)

A qualitative redox test used to distinguish Aldehydes from Ketones.

1. Setup Experiment

Select Unknown Compound

Acetaldehyde (Aliphatic Aldehyde) Benzaldehyde (Aromatic Aldehyde) Acetone (Ketone)

2. Observation

Physical State Clear Liquid

Status: Standby.
Select an organic compound and add Tollens' Reagent (Ammoniacal Silver Nitrate). The tube will be placed in a warm water bath.

3. Redox Chemistry

Aldehydes are oxidized to carboxylate ions.
Ag⁺ ions are reduced to metallic Silver (Ag⁰).

R-CHO + 2[Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ + 3OH⁻ →
R-COO⁻ + 2Ag↓ + 4NH₃ + 2H₂O

Ketones cannot be oxidized easily and show no reaction.
