Distinguish Primary (1°), Secondary (2°), and Tertiary (3°) Amines.

1. Setup Experiment

Select Unknown Amine

Ethylamine (Primary 1°) Diethylamine (Secondary 2°) Triethylamine (Tertiary 3°)

2. Observation

State in NaOH --

State in HCl --

Status: Standby.
Select an amine and proceed to Step 1. Benzenesulfonyl chloride and excess aqueous NaOH will be added to the test tube.

3. Chemical Principles

Hinsberg reagent reacts with 1° and 2° amines to form sulfonamides.

Primary (1°): Forms a sulfonamide with an acidic N-H bond. Soluble in NaOH.
Secondary (2°): Forms a sulfonamide with NO acidic N-H bond. Insoluble in NaOH.
Tertiary (3°): Does not react. Remains an insoluble amine layer.
