JEE Advanced: Group 17
Halogen Family Reactions & Interhalogens for chemca.in
Oxidizing Power Trend
Trend: F₂ > Cl₂ > Br₂ > I₂.
F₂ is the strongest oxidizing agent. It oxidizes H₂O to O₂ (or O₃), while I₂ is oxidized by concentrated HNO₃ to HIO₃.
Interhalogen Properties
Reactivity: Interhalogens are generally more reactive than pure halogens (except F₂) due to weaker X-X' bonds.
Hydrolysis: XX' + H₂O → HOX' + HX (The smaller halogen forms halide, larger forms oxoacid).
