Noble Gas Compounds & Xenon Chemistry for chemca.in

The Bartlett Discovery

Neil Bartlett noticed that PtF6 oxidizes O2 to O2+. Since the first Ionization Enthalpy of Xenon (1170 kJ/mol) is nearly identical to Oxygen (1175 kJ/mol), he successfully prepared the first noble gas compound:

Xe + PtF6 → Xe+[PtF6]-

Molecular Geometries

XeF₂: Linear (sp³d, 3 lone pairs).

XeF₄: Square Planar (sp³d², 2 lone pairs).

XeF₆: Distorted Octahedral (sp³d³, 1 lone pair).
