3. Chemical Principles

Octahedral MA₃B₃ Complexes: When an octahedral complex contains three of one ligand and three of another, it exhibits geometrical isomerism.

Facial (fac): Three identical ligands occupy the corners of one triangular face of the octahedron.

Meridional (mer): Three identical ligands occupy positions along an arc (a meridian) around the octahedron, forming a T-shape.

Optical Inactivity: An isomer is optically active (chiral) only if it lacks a plane of symmetry. Both fac and mer isomers possess at least one plane of symmetry (σ), meaning their mirror images are superimposable. Therefore, neither isomer is optically active.
