Acid-Base Titration (Methyl Orange)

Standardizing Unknown Na₂CO₃ using 0.1M HCl and Methyl Orange Indicator.

1. Burette Controls

Titrant (Acid) 0.1M HCl

Analyte (Base) 20mL Na₂CO₃

Burette Reading 0.00 mL

Instructions:
Open the valve to add acid continuously. The basic solution starts Yellow. As red swirls linger longer, switch to adding drop-by-drop. Stop at the first permanent Faint Orange (Peach) color!

2. Chemical Principles

Neutralization: A strong acid neutralizes the weak base in a two-step reaction, completing at around pH 3.7.

Na₂CO₃ + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H₂O + CO₂↑

Indicator (Methyl Orange):
Methyl Orange exhibits a color transition range from pH 3.1 to 4.4.
• Basic/Neutral (pH > 4.4): Yellow
• Equivalence Point (~pH 3.7): Faint Orange/Peach
• Highly Acidic (pH < 3.1): Red
