Acid-Base Titration (Phenolphthalein)

Standardizing Unknown HCl using 0.1M NaOH and Phenolphthalein Indicator.

1. Burette Controls

Titrant 0.1M NaOH

Analyte 20mL HCl

Burette Reading 0.00 mL

Instructions:
Open the valve to add base continuously. As pink swirls linger longer, switch to adding drop-by-drop. Stop at the first permanent pale pink color!

2. Chemical Principles

Neutralization: The strong base reacts with the strong acid to form salt and water.

HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)

Indicator (Phenolphthalein):
It is a weak acid itself. In acidic solutions (pH < 8.2), it exists in its colorless lactone form. Upon neutralization (pH > 8.2), it loses protons to form a resonant pink quinoid structure.
