Assume the filtrate after Group V. Magnesium does not have a general group reagent and remains in solution. Step 1 is to ensure the medium is ammoniacal.
3. Chemical Principles
1. Precipitation Reaction: Disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na₂HPO₄) is added to the ammoniacal solution of Magnesium salts. This yields a white crystalline precipitate of Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate.
Mg²⁺ + NH₄⁺ + PO₄³⁻ → MgNH₄PO₄↓
2. Nucleation Technique: This precipitate has a strong tendency to form supersaturated solutions. Scratching the inner walls of the test tube with a glass rod creates microscopic glass fragments and surface defects that act as nucleation sites, forcing crystallization to occur.
