Concept Quiz

Principles of Electrolysis

Electrolysis uses electrical energy to drive a non-spontaneous chemical reaction. A direct current (DC) passes through an electrolyte (a liquid containing mobile ions), causing chemical decomposition at the electrodes.

Anode (+): Oxidation (Loss of $e^-$)
Cathode (-): Reduction (Gain of $e^-$)
Mnemonic (PANIC): Positive is Anode, Negative Is Cathode.
Anions (negative ions) migrate to the Anode. Cations (positive ions) migrate to the Cathode.
