Confirmatory Test for Cations leaving a White Residue (Zn²⁺, Al³⁺, Mg²⁺).

Mass Color White Infusible Mass

Status: Standby.
Assume the charcoal cavity test left a white, infusible residue. In Step 1, 1-2 drops of Cobalt(II) Nitrate solution will be added to this mass.

3. Chemical Principles

1. Decomposition: Upon heating, Cobalt Nitrate decomposes into Cobalt(II) Oxide (black).

2Co(NO₃)₂ → 2CoO + 4NO₂ + O₂

2. Mixed Oxide Formation: The CoO reacts with the metallic oxide (MO or M₂O₃) in an oxidizing flame to form characteristic colored spinels or solid solutions.

CoO + MO → CoO·MO (Colored Mass)
