In-Depth Lecture Notes & Summary

01

What is Matter?

The universe is fundamentally composed of two things: Matter and Energy. Matter is defined as anything that has mass and occupies space (volume). Unlike energy (like light or heat), matter consists of physical particles.

02

States of Matter

Matter exists primarily in three states (phases) depending on temperature and pressure:

State Shape Volume Compressibility
Solid Definite Definite Negligible
Liquid Indefinite (takes shape of container) Definite Very Low
Gas Indefinite Indefinite High
03

Classification of Matter

1. Pure Substances

Have fixed chemical composition and distinct properties.

  • Elements: Cannot be broken down simpler (e.g., $Fe$, $O_2$, $Au$).
  • Compounds: Fixed ratio of 2+ elements (e.g., $H_2O$, $CO_2$).

2. Mixtures

Physical blend of two or more substances in any ratio.

  • Homogeneous: Uniform composition (e.g., Air, Saltwater).
  • Heterogeneous: Non-uniform composition (e.g., Sand & Water, Oil & Water).
Note on Gold Purity: 24 Karat gold is a pure element ($100\%$ $Au$). 22 Karat gold is a homogeneous mixture (alloy) consisting of 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metals (like Copper or Silver) to provide strength for jewelry.
04

Atomic Building Blocks

The atom is the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element. It consists of a dense nucleus surrounded by a cloud of electrons.

Proton ($p^+$) Charge: +1
Location: Nucleus
Neutron ($n^0$) Charge: 0
Location: Nucleus
Electron ($e^-$) Charge: -1
Location: Orbits

Matter Identifier

Select a substance to identify its chemical classification.

Classification Pure Substance (Compound)

Water consists of a fixed ratio of Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms chemically bonded.
