Oxidation State Trends
Stability of +5 state decreases down the group due to the Inert Pair Effect.
Bi5+ is a very strong oxidizing agent. Nitrogen is unique as it can show all oxidation states from -3 to +5.
Phosphorus Allotropes
White P: Discrete P4 tetrahedra, highly reactive (stored in water), glows in dark.
Red P: Polymeric chain of P4 units, non-toxic, used in matchsticks.
Black P: Most stable, thermodynamic allotrope with layered structure.
