3. Chemical Principles
d-d Transition: Transition metal ions have degenerate d-orbitals that split into two energy levels (t₂g and eโ) in a ligand field.
Absorption: When white light passes through, an electron in the lower t₂g level absorbs a photon with energy exactly equal to the gap (E = hc/ฮป = ฮโ) and jumps to the higher eโ level.
Complementary Color: The absorbed wavelength is subtracted from the white light. The light that is transmitted (or reflected) is a mixture of the remaining wavelengths, which our eyes perceive as the complementary color on the color wheel.
