Dumas Method: Estimation of Nitrogen

Oxidize an organic compound in a CO₂ atmosphere and measure the pure N₂ gas collected over KOH.

1. Setup Experiment

Select Organic Compound

Urea (~46.6% N) Pyridine (~17.7% N) Glycine (~15.0% N)

Sample Mass (m) 0.25 g

2. Live Telemetry

Temperature 298 K

Pressure 1.0 atm

Collected N₂ Gas Volume (V) 0.00 mL

Status: Standby. Adjust the sample mass and click Start Combustion to begin the oxidation process. CO₂ is currently purging the tube.

3. Final Calculation

1. Moles N₂ = (P × V) / (R × T)
2. Mass N = Moles N₂ × 28.02 g/mol
3. % Nitrogen = (Mass N / Sample Mass) × 100
