Baeyer's Test

Test for unsaturation (C=C or C≡C bonds) using cold, dilute, alkaline KMnO₄.

2. Observation

Physical State Clear Liquid

Status: Standby.
Select a compound. The addition of Baeyer's Reagent (cold, alkaline Potassium Permanganate, KMnO₄) will act as a mild oxidizing agent.

3. Chemical Principles

Positive Test: Alkenes and alkynes reduce the deep purple MnO₄⁻ ion to insoluble, brown MnO₂.

Mechanism (Syn-Hydroxylation):
The pi-bond attacks the permanganate ion, forming a cyclic manganate ester intermediate, which hydrolyzes to a vicinal diol (colorless) and MnO₂ (brown precipitate).

Note: Saturated alkanes and stable aromatic rings (like Benzene) do not react.
