2,4-DNP Test (Brady's Test)

A qualitative test to detect Aldehydes and Ketones via Hydrazone formation.

1. Setup Experiment

2. Observation

Physical State Clear Liquid
Status: Standby.
Select an organic compound. The addition of Brady's reagent (2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine) tests for the presence of a carbonyl group (>C=O).

3. Chemical Principles

Reaction: Nucleophilic addition-elimination. The -NH₂ group attacks the carbonyl carbon, eliminating water to form a 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone.

Conjugation & Color:
- Aliphatic carbonyls yield a Yellow precipitate.
- Aromatic/Conjugated carbonyls yield an Orange or Red precipitate due to extended pi-electron delocalization.
- Alcohols, esters, and acids do not react.
