Physical Properties of Ethers

By Chemca Editorial Team Last Updated: January 2026 6 min read

Ethers are organic compounds containing an oxygen atom bonded to two alkyl or aryl groups ($R-O-R'$). Their properties are significantly influenced by the polar C-O bonds and the absence of hydrogen atoms bonded directly to oxygen.

1. Physical State

  • Lower Ethers: Dimethyl ether ($CH_3OCH_3$) and Ethyl methyl ether ($CH_3OC_2H_5$) are gases at room temperature.
  • Higher Ethers: Diethyl ether and higher homologs are colorless, volatile liquids with a characteristic pleasant "ethereal" smell.

2. Dipole Moment

The $C-O-C$ bond angle in ethers is not $180^\circ$ but approximately $110^\circ$ (close to tetrahedral).

$$ \text{Bond Angle } \angle C-O-C \approx 110^\circ $$

Due to the electronegativity difference between Carbon and Oxygen, the C-O bonds are polar. Because of the bent angular structure, the bond dipoles do not cancel out.
Result: Ethers have a small net dipole moment ($1.15 - 1.3 \ D$), making them weakly polar.

3. Boiling Points

Ethers have much lower boiling points than isomeric alcohols but are comparable to alkanes of similar molecular mass.

Why lower than Alcohols?

Ethers do not contain any hydrogen attached to oxygen ($O-H$ bond). Therefore, they cannot form intermolecular hydrogen bonds with other ether molecules. Intermolecular forces are limited to weak dipole-dipole interactions and Van der Waals forces.

Comparison (Molar Mass $\approx$ 72-74)

Compound Type Boiling Point (K)
n-Pentane Alkane 309.1
Ethoxyethane Ether 307.6
Butan-1-ol Alcohol 390.0

4. Solubility

Solubility in Water: Lower ethers (like dimethyl ether, diethyl ether) are fairly soluble in water.

Why are they soluble?

The oxygen atom in ether has two lone pairs. It can form Hydrogen Bonds with water molecules ($R_2O \cdots H-O-H$).
Note: Solubility decreases as the size of the hydrophobic alkyl groups increases.

Solubility in Organic Solvents: Ethers are highly soluble in organic solvents (alcohol, benzene, chloroform) and are excellent solvents themselves for many organic compounds due to their low reactivity.

5. Density

Ethers are generally lighter than water. The density increases with an increase in molecular mass.
