The Language of Chemistry
ICSE Class 9 Chemistry | Chapter 1
Key Concepts
This chapter introduces the fundamental symbols and notations used to represent chemical substances.
- Symbol: A short-hand notation of an element. E.g., $H$ for Hydrogen, $Na$ for Sodium (Natrium).
- Valency: The combining capacity of an atom or a radical. It is determined by the number of electrons lost, gained, or shared.
- Radical: An atom or a group of atoms that behaves like a single unit with a charge. E.g., $SO_4^{2-}$ (Sulphate).
- Chemical Formula: The representation of a molecule using symbols. Created using the Criss-Cross method.
- Chemical Equation: The shorthand representation of a chemical change. $\text{Reactants} \rightarrow \text{Products}$.
