Difference Between Electrolytic and Galvanic Cells
Electrochemical cells are devices capable of either generating electrical energy from chemical reactions or using electrical energy to cause chemical reactions. The two primary types of these cells are Galvanic (Voltaic) cells, which feature spontaneous reactions, and Electrolytic cells, which require an external power source to drive non-spontaneous reactions.
One of the most frequently tested concepts in JEE, NEET, and Board Exams is understanding the differences in energy conversion, spontaneity, and the polarity of the Anode and Cathode between these two cells. Review the comparison chart below for a quick conceptual summary.
